Delighting in the Lord (Psalm 37:4; 16: 1-11)

Delighting in the Lord is the greatest treasure and pleasure any believer can have. It’s our occupation, satisfaction and worth in Christ. Delight in God implies that God is chosen as the supreme good of the soul and spirit. It implies universal confidence in God. It also implies obedience, service, submission and deep interest in God’s honor and glory.

It’s only in delighting in the Lord God that a believer can experience meaningful spiritual fulfilment and purpose. Many delight in wealth, status, material possessions, and other temporary things of this world.  God longs for His children to delight in Him. The promise of Psalm 37:4 is conditional, because God delights to bestow that on which the heart is set that delights in Him.

How do we delight ourselves in the Lord? By doing what pleases Him and putting His Law/Word in our hearts (Psalm 40: 8; Rom. 7:22). This world can never satisfy our deepest longings, but if we chose to delight in God’s way, He will always provide and beyond our expectations. Jesus said ‘Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14).

King David and Jesus Christ are our case study:

Psalm 16: 1-11 enjoins us to only delights in God, but also delights in God’s people (V.3). If you delight in God’s people you will not be harsh, rude and unkind to them. David delights in God’s providence (VV.5-6). David understood that God is His portion, inheritance, and cup. God maintains his lot. David said his share (Lines) has been pleasant and he has a beautiful inheritance from the Lord to maintain.

David also finds delights in God’s pleasures (V.11). Do you want life and joy? Here’s the secret: Live on God’s path, live in His presence and live for His pleasures.

Conclusion: we have to follow the example of Jesus who always delight to do God’s will and paid the supreme sacrifice to please God.
